Timaru Town and Country Indoor bowlers Derek Cooper and Matt Blissett were successful in theSouth Canterbury Henselite and Junior singles events held on Sunday. In the Henselite final D.Cooper had a brilliant start to lead 9 - 1 after 7 ends of the 15 end final. Christine Shand fought back with a well deserved 4 on the 8th end as Cooper missed with an upshot aiming to kill the end. A brace of twos on the next 2 ends however saw Cooper take a commanding 13 - 5 lead after 10 ends. Shand applied pressure on the next end to gain 2 shotsto which Cooper replied with a single to lead by 7 shots with 3 ends to play. Although Shandscored on the remaining 3 ends she could not catch Cooper who held on for a 14 - 11 victory.in the semi finals Cooper ran away to 13 - 3 lead over Ray Christensen before claiming the match16 - 7. C.Shand also held a commanding lead of 10 - 5 over Barb Reid after 11 ends but Reid ralliedlate in the match to trail by 2 going into the last end, but it was Shand who scored 2 to win 12 - 8.An intriguing junior final ensued with Dylan Snelleksz taking an early 4 - 2 lead over defendingchampion Matt Blissett. It was superb draw bowls by Snelleksz that had put him in this position.Blissett called on his experience to secure a 3 on the sixth end when he moved the jack from theSnelleksz shot with his third bowl, to one of his back bowls and added another shot with his last.A single to Snelleksz on the penultimate end saw him trail by two. Blissett held the shot on the last end and Snelleksz had to move the jack with his last bowl but was a fraction narrow to make thefinal score 9 - 5 to Blissett. In the semi finals Blissett proved too strong for his brother Adam winning 10 - 3. Snelleksz was made to work very hard by Crystal Jones before running out a 6 - 5 victor.Cooper will contest the NZ Natioal Henselite finals in Auckland on September 14, while Matt Blissett will contest the NZ National Junior finals in Lower Hutt on August 31.
